It’s very important that people with HIV receive expert care at a specialist HIV clinic.

New European HIV treatment guidelines : When to start treatment
They recommend that people who also have hepatitis B or C or kidney disease should start taking HIV treatment when their CD4 cell count is between 350 and 500 cells/mm3.

New European HIV treatment guidelines : Screening for cancers and other diseases
Also included in the new guidelines is a recommendation that people with HIV should be screened for certain cancers. This includes anal cancer screening for gay men, and prostate cancer screening for men over 50.

New European HIV treatment guidelines : Screening for hepatitis C
Many people with HIV are also co-infected with hepatitis C. The new guidelines recommend that all patients should be tested for the infection when they are first diagnosed with HIV. Further, regular tests are also recommended for people at risk of becoming infected.

New European HIV treatment guidelines : TB treatment
Tuberculosis is a very common illness in people with HIV. It needs expert management. Immediate HIV treatment is recommended if a patient who also has TB has a CD4 cell count below 100 cells/mm3. Those with a CD4 cell count between 100 and 350 cells/mm3 should complete two months of TB therapy before treatment with anti-HIV drugs is started.

A separate study has looked at the safety and effectiveness of etravirine (Intelence) during pregnancy.

HIV and hepatitis
Many people with HIV are also infected with hepatitis B, hepatitis C, or both. This is called co-infection. Liver disease caused by these viruses is an important cause of illness and death in people with HIV.
